Stay warm and save money this winter

July 04, 2014 has reported (07/04/2015) on ways to save energy during winter while staying warm.

According to the team at Sustainability Victoria, there are many simple ways to keep the heat in and the winter chill out this season.

1. Ceiling insulation is a very effective barrier against the winter cold.  Most Victorians should use ceiling insulation that is rated a minimum of R3.5.

2. Wear extra layers inside during winter so the thermostat can be lowered to between 18-20 degrees.  This can decrease running costs by up to 10 per cent.

3. Seal any cracks and gaps in external walls, ceilings and floors.  Use draught stoppers on doors and seal the door frame with stripping.

4. The fridge runs constantly so make sure that it is running efficiently with a tight door seal.  Consider turning off a second fridge over winter if you have one.

5. Only heat and light rooms that are being used and close off doors to unoccupied rooms.

6.  Use a cold wash for clothes washing and consider drying on a rack or line.

7.  Check your electricity rates and see if you are getting the best deal.  Go to

8.  Turn off appliances at the wall when not in use which can save up to $100 on your annual power bill.

9.  Swap to energy-efficient light globes such as LEDs.

10.  Have a free standby power controller installed to save electricity and money.
